“He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions” (Psalm 107: 20).
The Indian-born English journalist and novelist, Joseph Kipling (1865 – 1936), noted that “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” One of the greatest kings that walked the face of the earth, King Solomon, asserted that “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones (Proverbs 16: 24 NIV). As cool water to the famished soul; so are kind words to a good soul injured by injustice. Equally, just as kind words can psychologically heal a victim of domestic abuse, so cruel words can turn a sweet heart into a bitter beast.
No matter the circumstance, in as much as it depends on you, speak kind words rather than cruelty. Through the words you utter, be a healer and not a destroyer of people around you. Always remember, the words you utter – whether spoken or written – can’t return back to you without accomplishing something good or bad, no matter how little.
Importantly, this medicinal healing power of the word on the body and soul is a process that begins by thinking aright. Therefore, ask yourself: Is the word that I’m brandishing and dishing out the truth? Will it build better friendship? Will it destroy goodwill? Will it build or destroy relationships? Can the word embolden the weak and help the hopeless? Please be cautious of your thoughts which often give rise to the words you speak. Scripture says, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12: 34 KJV).
More importantly, be careful of your thoughts as they often become your words. Invariably, your words often fly and transform into your actions. And your actions; with the reactions and counterreactions they create; shape not only your own destiny, but also could make or mar the fortunes of other people and the future of our world. Therefore, think right, talk right; so you can walk and work aright; as your word can create or destroy your health and wealth.
